There’s plenty of sleeping mats out there to choose from, but this little number from Nordisk delivers big on something very small indeed – weight. Read on for our Nordisk Ven 2.5 sleeping mat review…
Technically the Nordisk Ven 2.5 sleeping mat should be described as a half-mat, a cunning weightloss scheme that Thermarest have quietly produced for years. However, unlike a half-Thermarest, which is actually rather small, the Ven is far more generously sized, most pleasingly in the breadth, which makes comparable mats seem thin and Italian-style crispy. It’s also relatively lengthy in comparison to other half-length mats, giving a comfortable snooze in spite of the light weight. Light weight is something Nordisk have made a bit of a name for themselves in, as you’ll notice from our earlier Nordisk Halland 2 LW tent review.
The weight is the real seller here, and the Nordisk Ven is particularly featherweight – a claimed 280 grams – our scales said 305 grams in the packaging – puts it at the super-light end of the sleeping mat spectrum. Nordisk say the weight is down to “zone construction and ultra lightweight foam” which sounds plausible, and you’ll be getting an insulation rating of r 2.3, which compares well with the competition.
Worthy of mention is the push/pull valve, which makes inflation a doddle. Pull to open, push to lock, simples. Although we found this didn’t self-inflate like some, it only needed four to six breaths to fatten up, which is hardly a huge effort on the hill.
Finally, that bronze/gold outer cover is 20D Honeycomb Rip-Stop fabric, which certainly didn’t hole during our few camping trips with it. Cheap mats that have failed fast tend to have sharp edges around the valve that wear through, cheap material that holes or just poor valve build, and none of these seem to be present here, luckily.
The build quality is top-notch, as far as a detailed inspection can reveal, with good bonding around the edges, high quality valve assembly, and a rather nicely chamfered rubber seal around the valve seat, so we’d expect this mat to last for years if not abused.
In summary: Good generous size, light weight. Nice compromise for light escapades.
